Replay: Nightcliff v St Mary's - 2025-26 NTFL Round 11

St Mary’s have clinched another major scalp bringing the late pace and pressure to overcome a Nightcliff side that led for the majority of the match.

The Tigers had suffocated Saints out of the contest in their last meeting five weeks ago and have been on a tear in the NTFL since.

It appeared to be going the same way when their defence shut down Saints’ early momentum and kept them goalless throughout the first quarter.

However, in the baking heat at Nightcliff Oval it was the Green Machine who ran out the game better getting the goals when they mattered to see it out 11.6 (72) to 9.10 (64).

Saints had the mountain of early chances but the Tigers defence cut them off at every opportunity while midfield weapons such as Dylan Landt were kept on a tight leash.

For all their carry and clearances they came away with just a Luke Patterson behind, which was very quickly cancelled out by a goal for Wade Derksen, who scored eight the previous week against Tiwi.

The Tigers took control from there piling on the points while Riley Baldi and Mitchell Trewhella continued their fine form through the midfield.

It wasn’t until midway through the second quarter when more than 20 points down that Saints got their first goal through Patterson.

But it was an inspirational piece that picked the side up as their small forwards such as Nick Yarran and in particular Xavier Vallejo, who scored four on the day, ramped up the pressure.

Jackson Braunthal had a big day out as well getting his hands on the pill plenty, particularly as Landt started to shake off his hard taggers.

Still though it was Nightcliff in control using their plethora of experience down back including Nathan Brown to limit the Saints attack.

They just weren’t able to pull away themselves with missed chances and a Saints defence that is a point of pride as well keeping the margin within touching distance.

And a late flurry of goals for Saints, including a Dylan Landt effort, at the end of third quarter put things in the balance.

The streak of goals extended to seven in a row in the fourth quarter with Braunthal the man to send his side ahead for the first time since the opening minutes.

In that respect the match was reminiscent of their one-point defeat of reigning premiers Districts a week prior coming from behind to sneak the win when it mattered.

Nightcliff kept fighting but a couple inaccuracies both in front of goal and on the escape went against them despite responding twice through Rhett Montgomerie and Marly McGregor when down.

And when Jack Landt turned into a sharpshooter with two fantastic shots from the sideline Saints had it sealed in spite of Nightcliff’s early pressure and control.

“That was impressive from the boys, last time we played them they outclassed us and even in this one at the start they had us again,” Braunthal said.

“But the boys kept fighting hard especially through the guts, I thought it was quite a gutsy win and showed the extra work we’ve put in since that loss.

“It came down to the midfield in the second half, we locked on a bit more and didn’t get sucked to the footy and more held our space.

“I won’t lie it was good fun putting the boys in front and the pressure from the boys all day was super impressive and made that possible.”

Braunthal is in his first season with St Mary’s coming up with his good mate in Patterson and both establishing themselves in the side.

“It’s been awesome, it’s such a lovely club, we had a few contacts and thought why not give this a crack,” he said.

“It’s a great change in life style and such a family club, yeah no complaints so far.”

PREVIEW

Two weeks ago the prospect of beating Southern Districts seemed bleak, but now Nightcliff and St Mary’s have both achieved that feat ahead of a blockbuster meeting against each other.

Every moment of the match will be streamed live from 4pm on Saturday by The NT News and KommunityTV as part of our season-long NTFL coverage.

WHY TO WATCH

Nightcliff have gone on a tear in recent week, running the gauntlet of top sides and collecting big scalps along the way to prove they belong at the top end of the table.

Wade Derksen has starred in front of goal with eight last round against Nightcliff putting himself in the battle to top the scoring leaderboard come the end of the season.

Mitchell Trewhella and Brandan Parfitt were midfield standouts last round in a side that has plenty of ball winners able to win the clearance battles.

But Nightcliff’s strength is how solid they are across the ground and their ability, as proven last time against St Mary’s, to suffocate their opposition.

Saints had perhaps their best showing of the season in their one-point defeat of Southern Districts last time out.

Down on the scoreboard, in sixth position on the ladder and without their main scorer in Jackson Calder for the foreseeable future, St Mary’s showed their character as they pulled themselves into contention.

Skipper Dylan Landt starred collecting plenty of the ball and importantly impacted on the scoreboard with goals as part of a more unpredictable Saints attack.

Kieren Parnell led the defensive efforts and he too will have his work cut out for him in this one against Nightcliff.
