A FARM in the Yarra Valley has been listed for sale with an asking price of more than $4 million.

The 14ha lifestyle property, Valley Farm at Healesville, will be sold via private sale, and is seeking $4.2 million – $4.6 million.

The property has been owned by Greg and Louise Dunnett for almost 30 years.

Located five minutes from the township, Valley Farm features a fully refurbished art-deco home, picture-book gardens, 2.5ha of pinot noir vines and a long frontage to Chum Creek.

The Dunnetts’ first initiative when they took over the property was to plant the vines.

“The wine industry was booming in the early nineties, so we earned a contract straight away and built the business up from there,” Greg said.

“Our grapes are always in high demand, with 15 tonnes sold off to contract wine makers each year and four tonnes processed for our own label.”

The original farmhouse, known as The Valley, was constructed in the early 1900s, but

rebuilt in 1946 in an affluent art-deco style, set in extensive gardens designed in consultation with the renowned Edna Walling.

The home offers four bedrooms, two bathrooms, modern kitchen, lounge/dining room and separate sitting rooms and, although fittings have changed over the years, it retains its integrity.

A wide bay window looks out to mature gardens which feature a wisteria-draped pavilion, deciduous trees, wide lawns, ornamental lake and mountain views.

“The federal government bought the whole property in 1978 and built the satellite station, ostensibly for the broadcast of the 1984 Olympic Games,” Greg said.

“At first, we used the buildings for warehouse storage and offices, but about 20 years ago we converted them into three self-contained apartments, which have been very successful as short-stay accommodation.

“The national park is on our doorstep with plenty of walks and that, along with people’s interest in wineries, has meant our business is the best we’ve seen in 20 years.”

The property is being sold by Abercromby’s Real Estate.

It comes as a well-known horse racing property in NSW has been listed for sale.

The 97.5ha property, Bong Bong Farm at Moss Vale, is the home of Waratah Thoroughbreds.

It has an asking price of $35 million and is being sold by prominent thoroughbred breeders Paul and Angela Fudge.
