A North East Victorian farming family have farewelled their “special” 511ha farm after it was sold in a top-dollar deal.

Arrawidgee Red Angus’ Jeff and Janet Thynne have sold the property, Bunyarra, located on the banks of the Murray River at Brimin.

The Thynne family listed the farm for sale this autumn, where it was expected to field offers worth $15-$16.5 million.

Specific details regarding the sale remain undisclosed, however it is understood the property was sold about its expected value to a private family buyer.

It is understood the buyer is a young, emerging family based in North East Victoria.

In a recent social media post Arrawidgee Red Angus said: “It is with a heavy heart that we need to find new homes for our entire herd of PTIC registered cows, PTIC registered heifers, commercial cows and bulls”.

Bunyarra, 25km west of Rutherglen, was offered with more than 1500ML of water entitlements via four separate sources. It is understood the property was sold with some of the water entitlements, while some have been retained by the vendors.

The Thynnes bought Bunyarra about seven years ago when they were looking for a property to expand their Red Angus enterprise.

“As you enter Bunyarra through the red gum entrance and drive down the 1.5km tree-lined driveway, you feel that you have arrived somewhere very special,” they said earlier this year.

“It had to have Murray River frontage, irrigation, privacy, undulating land and have the potential to grow anything in abundance. Bunyarra ticked all these boxes and more.”

Nutrien Harcourts Wangaratta director Joe McKenzie handled the sale of the property and said there was considerable interest from a variety of potential buyers.

“There was really good interest in the property thanks to its farmland, 8km Murray River frontage and river water entitlements,” he said.

“There was interest from bigger and established farming family buyers. Most of the inquiry was from established rural people within about 50-80km of the district.

“Generally for the market, I think buyers are being much more astute at the moment. The balance of production figures, return on investment and quality all have to line-up now.”
