Gorman family to sell NSW Riverina farm, North Auburn, at Savernake

After six generations with one family, a southern Riverina livestock and cropping farm is for sale for the first time.

House prices starting to ‘cool off’ into 2022

After holding North Auburn farm at Savernake since 1880, the Gorman family has decided the time has come for succession planning.

Andrew and Kate Gorman are selling 714ha of prime cropping and livestock-fattening country after six generations of family ownership. The property is expected to field offers from about $9.7 million.

“I have lived here all my life and once I got married, my wife and I have been here for about 38 years together,” Andrew said.

“It has been good to us and now we are going to downsize and concentrate on the smaller home block.”

The Gorman family is selling the North Auburn parcel of its aggregated holdings, known as Auburn, and will continue to own and farm their home block.

Selling agent Matt Horne of Elders Deniliquin is managing the sale of the property, listed for sale for the first time in its 140-year history.

“North Auburn presents prospective purchasers with a golden opportunity to secure clean and reliable country,” Mr Horne said.

“The Savernake district is renowned for its productivity and is situated near major regional centres such as Yarrawonga-Mulwala and Corowa.”

Not far from North Auburn, five NSW Riverina farms were recently sold in deals totalling about $40 million.

Throughout their time at North Auburn the Gorman family has operated a mixed farming enterprise with a variety of winter crops, rice, sheep and cattle.

The holding has been fenced into eight main paddocks with reliable stock water consisting of catchment and channel-filled dams, and the West Corurgan supply channel.

Working improvements include a four-stand electric shearing shed with adjoining yards. The yards feature established shade trees and are easily accessible from the Auburn-Momalong Rd.

Andrew said he constructed the shearing shed with his father using locally sourced timber and steel.

“I built the shearing shed in 1980 with my father using materials sourced from the Berrigan Racecourse and the Tocumwal RAAF hangar,” he said.

North Auburn is located within the West Corurgan Irrigation District, which derives its water from the Murray River just west of Corowa, and offers 30ha of laser-levelled border check irrigation with significant scope for further development including overhead spray.

The country consists of red to grey clay loam soils, with a lengthy pasture history and lightly scattered Murray pine, bull oak and grey box timbers.

Earlier this month the Carr family listed 3877ha Funny Hill farm in the Southern Tablelands of NSW for sale after being held by the family for 162 years.
