Author Angela Goode lists her farm Field of Mars at Hynam, SA for sale for more than $1.9m
A well known author has listed her South Australian farm on the market. The irrigation and grazing property will go under the hammer in August. See all the details here.
HISTORY collides with versatility in a South Australian property in a way which could be considered out of this world.
Fields of Mars at Hynam near Naracoorte, SA, has been owned for nearly three decades by Charlie and Angela Goode.
If their names sound familiar, it’s no surprise. Charlie is well known in the agricultural world for his contributions to the Hereford breed, farm consulting and financial counselling.
And Angela is a best-selling author with several books under her belt and a stellar career as a journalist.
For 28 years, the Goodes have called Field of Mars home, and have made the most of the ideal soil types and water assets which include a safe source of groundwater for irrigation.
Angela said the property name came from a previous owner, Maurice White, who bought the land in 1937.
“Field of Mars is derived from the French “Champ de Mars” meaning battlefield and came from the Queensland property where he was a jackaroo and where every paddock was named after a famous battle,” Angela said.
The couple has run a range of enterprises on the land, including the Silverton Hereford stud, then swapped to finishing cattle.

They have also grown a range of crops of irrigated crops including Lucerne for seed, white clover for seed, canola, oats, and have run cattle, made hay and silage.
Charlie said they had even turned their hand to finishing stock on irrigated pasture, buying drought-affected cows from northern NSW and fattening them on Lucerne.
Angela has been involved in running the farm as well as her writing and said they had been thrilled to find the property, especially its “superb soils”.
They have also loved the gracious country home built in 1909 from local limestone. It has four to five main bedrooms, a formal siting room, a country style chicken complete with a Rayburn stove and an open plan living room. Other features of the house include tin ceilings and polished floorboards.
“It has been a happy family home, no more so than when it is filled with people,” Angela said.
Field of Mars has two pivot sites, each 11.8ha, which are watered by a towable Reinke pivot. The water is pumped using an electric submersible pump drawing from the shallow underground aquifer.
There is an allocation of 84 megalitres plus carry-over and given the Goodes did not use their whole entitlement this year, the new owners will have access to 128 megalitres of water for irrigation next season.
The remainder of the property is fenced into eight paddocks with a laneway system for ease of stock movement, and stock water is provided in troughs which are filled with groundwater supplied under high pressure.
Other improvements include an additional cottage which is rented out through Airbnb, steel cattle yards and machinery and storage sheds.
Field of Mars is 15km east of Naracoorte, SA.
