After a price rally, canola prices have settled at $806/tonne this week, down from $825/tonne offered last week.

Meanwhile, wheat has slipped slightly to trend at $342/tonne.

Agricultural consultant Colin Peace said the pace of harvest slowed this week due to the rain at the weekend.

“Canola prices have drifted $11 a tonne lower in the past week despite some strength in international markets and a weaker Aussie dollar,” Mr Peace said.

“According to traders, Australian canola is struggling to be competitive in world markets.”

This week, the Australian dollar dropped to US64.62 cents, the lowest since November last year. And the dollar remains challenged by a weak Chinese economy and recent disappointing employment statistics.

In contrast, interest rates were expected to boost the US economy and push up the value of the US dollar against most world currency.

Pressure from the frost in September continues to take a toll, and Mr Peace said canola hay baled near Pleasant Hills in the eastern Riverina region of NSW, was being discounted from $275/tonne ex farm to $220/tonne.

“Other frosted crops in the Mid and Upper north of South Australia were offered at $300/tonne, ex farm.

Barley hay on farms near Balaklava was offered for $300/tonne and sellers between Shepparton and Raywood were offering barley hay for $250/tonne to $280/tonne.
