Grain and oilseed prices for Melbourne, Adelaide, Oaklands
Slight increases in Victoria have been recorded for both wheat and canola prices. See how values are tracking.
Canola prices have increased by $5 a tonne in Victoria, with quotes of $815 a tonne and, wheat has also shown a slight uptick increasing from $380 last week to $383 this week.
It was another stop-start week of harvest activity in Victoria, with hot weather prompting harvest bans in many parts on Monday.
Victorian farmers delivered 610,200 tonnes of grain to GrainCorp depots in the past week and the total for 2024 is 2,041,900.
The total for the eastern states at GrainCorp sites is 10,397,300.
A GrainCorp spokesperson said several weeks of wet weather had initially delayed harvest activity in southern NSW and Victoria, however farmers were welcoming the drier conditions.
Agricultural consultant Colin Peace said the immediate export demand for feed-type grains was currently being challenged by a bulk shipping lineup that was heavily featuring canola and chickpeas in Victorian ports and lentils at South Australian ports.
He said grain markets were currently supported by the lower Australian dollar and a lower forecast of production and stocks.
The Australian dollar hit a 13-month low of US63.7 cents earlier in the week due to a strong Mr Peace said US dollar and concerns over weak economic growth that could result in an Australian interest rates cut rather than a rise.
In addition the exchange rate was helping to offset some larger wheat production estimates from Western Australia and Argentina.
“The outlook for pulses is unclear as Canadian growers may plant less canola and more pulses when their paddocks thaw,” he said.
Production costs were also expected to fall by 8 per cent and US tariffs were anticipated to reduce the Canadian canola price by 16 per cent next year.
