GrainCorp delivers resilient 1h24 result after 'tumultuous' three years

Canola prices have hit a two-year high at port in Victoria to settle at $768/tonne for the week starting October 14 2024.

The price is up $112/tonne from $656/tonne this time last year and shows a $22/tonne increase on last week.

Wheat is averaging $354/tonne which is the same as last week and a fall of $52/tonne compared to this time last year.

Lentils have increased to $940/tonne compared to $910/tonne last week and the prices are $30/tonne less than at the same time last year.

Agricultural consultant Colin Peace said both global and local weather conditions had combined to boost prices for many commodities, but this was offset by the fact growers were expecting lower yields.

For lentils brokers have reported a $30/tonne lift in the past week and a $170/tonne or 23 per cent rise since the frosts began in September.

“Although some forecasts are suggesting 15mm to 25mm of rain will cover all of Victoria except for the northern Mallee this week, faba bean crops are also struggling,” Mr Peace said.

New-crop prices for No2 grade faba beans have increased by $70/tonne to $530/tonne delivered to Melbourne.

Mr Peace said lingering dry weather continued to delay planting of winter wheat in Russia and as a result prices for Russian wheat had increased by $22/tonne in the past three weeks.

“Supply concerns and further restrictions on Russian wheat exports are supporting prices and export bids for wheat and barley, and these are up another $3 to $5/tonne this week,” he said.
