Good Weekend

The November 16 Edition

I write this editor’s letter just after a US election campaign during which immigrants were demonised. Some might read today’s cover story, about Croatian-Australian Darko Desic, and think that’s as it should be: Desic did, after all, grow an illegal substance, get caught and thrown into jail, break out and live on the run for 29 years. Others, though, might find it a fascinating and very moving story about a fellow human whose life took twists and turns, some for the better, some for the worse, some self-inflicted, others not. They might come to the end of it and actually like Desic, and wish him all the best for the quiet life he hopes to now enjoy. I know I did. – Editor, Katrina Strickland
