Dose Espresso
It's a bit 'Melbourne', in that you have to know this fabulous cafe with its strong-bone architecture is there and discover it for yourself - either through a passageway or from the back lane and car park. That's why the crowd is so fiercely loyal, coming back with kids, mums and colleagues for gorgeous, gutsy Di Gabriel caffe lattes ($3.50). Hippie Lane's high-fibre, wholegrain, I-can't-believe-it's-gluten-free cakes and fresh, toasty lunchtime sandwiches on Brasserie Bread add to the appeal. Owner Sam Gabrielian owns Di Gabriel coffee, hence the wall of coffee geekery and the 5 kilogram Toper roaster. Maybe this isn't a bit Melbourne, after all - maybe it's very Sydney.
