Petite new bistro-deli No 100 packs a punch on Flinders Lane
Flinders Lane’s delicious strip east of Swanston Street just got tastier, with the arrival of a truly casual all-day venue, No 100, serving Italian deli sandwiches for quick stops plus European small plates.
Code Black Coffee’s founder Joseph Haddad is behind the venue, but a cafe this is not.
Hidden behind white half-window curtains lies a 24-seat timber-clad dining room and an adjoining deli counter where prosciutto San Daniele and Italian cheeses are cut to order. They might go into sandwiches made on All Are Welcome bread, such as bresaola, taleggio and fig jam, or be served alongside a glass of wine.
Chef Ryan Short offers a full complement of European-inspired plates for longer visits. A warm salad of watercress, marjoram pesto and mussels cooked in white wine joins torched ribbons of squid with ’nduja, currants and silverbeet, or there’s heftier fare, such as steak, duck breast and pork belly, plus rum baba for dessert.
The petite venue is split equally between the deli, where there’s a 10-seat communal table, and the classically styled bistro.
“People get a surprise when they turn around and see [the bistro] there,” says sommelier and venue manager Ellen Reinhardt.
Reinhardt has built a list of mostly lesser-known grapes grown in Australia, such as the Italian white wine pecorino, or there are four classic cocktails on offer, including an Australian negroni and a riff on an espresso martini using Code Black coffee liqueur.
