Tuck Shop Takeaway duo opens Karton Milk Bar in Caulfield North
Caulfield North local Tuck Shop Takeaway is well known for its burgers and Redskin milkshakes, with the charming corner shop attracting perpetual queues.
Now, you can grab your burger fix then nick a couple of doors up to nostalgic milk bar Karton for a 100s and 1000s ice-cream sandwich, a house-made cola slushie and a bag of mixed lollies.
The name is a blend of owners Karina and Clinton Serex, the brains behind the burger joint, and as is the Tuck Shop way, everything at Karton is made in-house or sourced from similarly dedicated producers.
At lunchtime, you can grab an award-winning pie from Sunshine's Ka Pies, followed by a smoked apple popsicle.
Shelves are stocked with a few pantry staples – Noisette bread, eggs, flour, perhaps a wrapped chunk of Warrnambool butter or a wedge of Quicke's cheddar from Britain – as well as socially-conscious household items like Thank You hand wash and Who Gives a Crap tissues.
With an old-school NBA Jam arcade game by the door, vintage ad posters for Peck's Paste and tins of Tom Piper on the wall, Karton tips a hat to days of sun-dappled, sprinkler-twinkled front lawns, while embracing all the skill and considered produce of today.
Open Tue-Sat 10am-9pm.
