Just open: Shortstop Coffee & Donuts, Melbourne
Social media-savvy doughnut fiends have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of US-inspired Shortstop Donuts.
Owner Anthony Ivey (ex-Market Lane) and business partner Sinye Ooi have been plotting their CBD shop for nearly two years, amassing nearly 18,000 followers on Instagram as they documented their sugar-filled research jaunts around the US and Canada. Even before they opened their earl grey doughnut had a cult following.
Shortstop specialises in cake rather than yeast doughnuts. The wet, milk-based batter allows for inventive creations such as a red velvet doughnut, coloured with beetroot rather than food dye, piped with cream cheese and dipped in dark chocolate.
The bakery is a simple operation: espresso and filter coffee served alongside nine doughnuts in a white tile and blondwood space.
In their first week they're already turning out more than 600 doughnuts a day, which have sold out by early afternoon. But they are accepting online orders.
They're open from 7.30am Monday to Friday – if you ever needed an excuse to eat doughnuts for breakfast, this is it.
