Just Open: Moroccan Soup Bar Deli-cacy, Brunswick East
Things are slowly taking shape at Moroccan Soup Bar's Brunswick East offshoot Deli-cacy at 313 Lygon Street. "Let's just say we're open but we're transitioning," says Moroccan Soup Bar's Hana Assafiri, who is making gradual changes to the former Miramar Nut Shop rather than shutting the shop for a complete makeover.
From the new deli counter customers can pick up preserved olives, marinated cheeses and MSB's smoky baba ghanoush, and from this week, "bits and bobs" such as tasty wraps and salads will be available to eat in (there's footpath seating and window benches).
Assafiri is already doing a roaring trade in jars of amlou, a Moroccan breakfast spread made with roasted almonds and argan oil, from a Moroccan plant reputed to have health benefits. Try it on a semolina-dusted slice of sourdough from Fitzroy North's Loafer bakers.
Those who fancy coffee can try the Moroccan version of a latte, nus nus (half-half), and grab a macaron ($2.50) with zesty or spicy flavours concocted by Assafiri and made by Cheltenham's Cacao. More extensive, eat-in options will be available in coming months when renovations on a back room are complete.
Moroccan Soup Bar Deli-cacy: 313 Lygon Street, Brunswick East. Open 7 days, 9am - 5pm.
