Byron Bay's Harvest Newrybar to open spin-off at Wisemans Ferry
David Moyle's food in Sydney? Yes, please. The mercurial pan rattler is finally bringing his edible act to town, with Byron Bay's Harvest Newrybar set to open a spin-off on the city's north-western outskirts, at Wisemans Ferry.
Harvest Wisemans will be a restaurant with acreage to grow its own produce, says Moyle, Harvest's creative director, who earned his stripes at Franklin in Hobart and Melbourne's Longsong.
While the restaurant will open next year as part of the new Wisemans Surf Lodge, Moyle explains it'll be accessible to the public.
"It ticks so many boxes for us. Surfing, food and space to grow our own produce. The area has been providing food forever," Moyle says.
Harvest Wisemans will offer an integrated venue, with a restaurant, outdoor bar, barbecue deck and kiosk where you can grab a sandwich after a surf.
"Our heartland is in creating experiences that redefine people's relationships with food, by building communities that honour the existing food bowl of our surroundings," Moyle says.
Wisemans Surf Lodge co-founder John Du Vernet says Wisemans Ferry is one of Sydney's best kept secrets.
"This region, known for its local growers, has been fuelling the Hawkesbury and greater Sydney with high-quality produce for decades," he says.
"In creating Wisemans Surf Lodge, we wanted to create a sustainable space that embraces the region and its sense of community, inclusive of its neighbouring vineyards, distilleries, stone fruit and citrus orchards."
Moyle says Harvest Wisemans will tap into the network of local food artisans and producers.
It's not the only promising food development in Sydney's north. In Dural, the Boathouse Group has lodged plans to put a 120-seat cafe-restaurant into the Hargraves Nursery site.
