After a car accident: your rights & rules

A YOUNG Richmond man has briefly faced court charged with causing the road death of his passenger more than a year ago.

Luke John Foster, 21, faced the Hobart Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with causing death by negligent driving, drink driving and failing to comply with his drivers license conditions.

On August 18 last year, a 20-year-old Pawtella man died in a single-vehicle crash on Stonehouse Road at Lemont.

Police at the time said they would allege the crash happened about 4.30am when Mr Foster lost control of a white 2008 Ford Ranger utility while trying to negotiate a right-hand curve.

They said the vehicle rotated and rolled, with the front-seat passenger thrown out of the car and declared dead at the scene.

Police also said at the time that Mr Foster was taken by ambulance to hospital in a stable condition with minor injuries, and that initial investigations said alcohol and failing to wear a properly-adjusted seatbelt were likely contributing factors in the fatality.

Mr Foster, who is on bail, has not yet entered a plea.

He will return to court on October 20.
