Glenorchy has rallied around a devastated family after their home was completely gutted by a blaze which left them with nothing but “the clothes on their back”.

About 12.40am Thursday morning, Tasmania Police and Fire crews were called to the fire on Devines Rd, Glenorchy.

The house was fully engulfed by flames when emergency services arrived, but thankfully the two adults and three children that lived in the home had all safely exited.

The two adults were transported to hospital by ambulance, where they were treated for minor smoke inhalation.

It’s believed the fire started by unattended candles in a bedroom but investigations are still ongoing.

Friend Kayla Cripps has started a GoFundMe page to help the family get back on their feet.

“Their home caught fire leaving them with nothing but the clothes on their back,” Ms Cripps wrote.

“So I’m just trying to help take a little pressure off them by raising some money to help buy some things they need and for accommodation.

“So please if you’re in a position to help, anything will do.”

September 22: A Tasmanian family-of-five have lost their home after a fierce midnight blaze, the cause of which firemen believe they may know.

About 12.40am Thursday morning, Tasmania Police and Fire crews were called to the house fire on Devines Rd, Glenorchy.

Upon arrival, the house was fully engulfed by flames but, thankfully, the two adults and three children that lived in the home had all safely exited the structure.

Multiple TFS units attended and extinguished the fire.

The two adults were transported to hospital by ambulance, where they were treated for minor smoke inhalation.

The devastated couple returned to their gutted home about 9.15am.

“We’re all safe, that’s the main thing,” said the woman.

They had car insurance — the front half of their Ford Territory was melted — but no home and contents insurance.

“I don’t know what to say,” the woman said.

“All from one tiny candle.”

The woman said the fire started when they went outside for a cigarette; when they returned, it was already too large to control.

Neighbours Peter and Robyn said they had a sleepless night and were “devastated” for their friends, whose children played with theirs regularly.

The couple at the centre of the blaze were “heartbroken”, they said.

Robyn ran outside to help the three children, while Peter doused the wooden boundary fence to prevent the fire jumping.

The cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed by fire investigators; however, it is believed to have been started by candles left unattended within a bedroom.

While the fire is not thought to be suspicious, anyone with information relating to the fire is asked to contact Police on 131444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at
