Funding announcement for the Rhyll brewery and distillery

Du Cane Brewery, the newest brewery cellar door in Launceston is set to pour its first beer today.

The vast brewery and dining hall will combine the best of Tasmania’s wilderness and creative culture in the heart of the city, breathing new life into the old Allgoods’ Tent City site, in Prince’s Square.

The project is a partnership between head brewer and founder of Du Cane Brewing, Will Horan and Sam Reid, co-founder of Willie’s Smith’s Cider and Apple Shed.

Mr Horan, Mr Reid and four other passionate Launceston locals supporting the project are avid adventurers.

The name Du Cane is an homage to Mr Horan’s initial brewing business supplying bushwalking huts operating along the Du Cane Range.

Mr Horan says it has been a dream come true to see his passion for beer grow from effectively a small home-brew business into the city’s first state-of-the-art brewery cellar door that will produce up to 200,000 litres a year in the coming years and build on the north’s burgeoning beer trail.

“I spent many hours walking behind my group, daydreaming of different beers that I would make and it’s been really rewarding to develop my passion for craft beer and to finally see this project come to life,” said Mr Horan.

A sense of the great outdoors has been brought inside with artificial turf laid and retro canvas lining the large bar area, while the old timber flooring has been beautifully repurposed as furnishings throughout.

The space is fit for families, tourists and locals alike, featuring a dedicated children’s area complete with climbing wall and community-focused casual lounge space with a large indoor fire as well as function spaces, a private dining room and a cellar door hub for the region’s boutique wines and spirits.

Mr Reid said they expect Du Cane to become a ‘must-do’ for visitors to Launceston, particularly those who like to get off the beaten track.

“We anticipate that this project will have a lasting positive long-term effect through collaboration with other small business owners in the region.” said Mr Reid.
