Missed opportunities to lock away a TSL finals spot won’t haunt Clarence players, coach says

Clarence could have sewn up a top four TSL spot against the Tigers last week, but the missed opportunity won’t haunt the side as it looks to topple Launceston for the second time this season.

CLARENCE will not shy away from talking about finals football despite missing two golden opportunities to cement their spot in the past fortnight.

The Roos get another chance to put one hand on fourth position on the TSL ladder when they host Launceston at Richmond Oval today.

Last week the side went down narrowly to the Tigers in a result which would have sealed their finals fate, while a round earlier they pushed reigning premier North Launceston to nine points after leading at halftime.

“Sometimes clubs don’t talk about finals and the ‘f-word’ and all this stuff, I think if we look at what clubs want to achieve every year, they want to play in the grand final or make finals,”

coach Jeromey Webberley said.

“Every club is the same, we want to do that. Yep we have missed some opportunity to put ourselves in there, but understand we are still in control of our destiny.

“There is two games to go, we are on even points with the Tigers, win two games, we are in. It is pretty simple.

“That’s what we want to do and that’s what we are aiming to do. Yes it would be disappointing if we missed the opportunity but the opportunity is not dead and buried.”

The Roos will be buoyed by their last outing against Launceston, where they travelled to Windsor Park as extreme underdogs but pulled off the upset of the season in heavy conditions to hand the Blues their first loss of 2020.

Clarence’s winning total of 2.5 was the lowest winning score for statewide football since before World War II.

Webberley isn’t expecting the Blues to head south seeking revenge, but is bracing for hot contest.

“That game up there was a bit of a dogfight, they were probably looking for the bye I reckon, they were a bit tired, six weeks in, hadn’t had the bye.

“I reckon it was a just a down day for them.

“I don’t think there will be any revenge as such, it will just be a hard, physical contest, which is what you get from Launceston.

“We back ourselves in, we have performed really well against the better teams in the competition this year.

“We go to Richmond confident and with no fear, if we play well we will win, but understand we have to play really well for all of the game.”
