Ben Holland breaks Tasmanian goalkicking record with 36 goals

A longstanding Tasmanian goalkicking record was broken on Saturday as the new leader made the most of a milestone occasion.

Tasmania has a new record for the most goals kicked in one local footy game.

It’s an honour which now belongs to Wesley Vale veteran Ben Holland after he booted 36 goals in his side’s 356-point North West Football Association win over Rosebery-Toorak on Saturday.

The previous record of 31 was set in 2006 by East Ulverstone’s Jamie Auton.

It was an effort which took Holland to 63 for the season to be ranked among the leading goalkickers in all of Tasmanian footy.

And remarkably Holland was playing his 250th game when he achieved the historic feat.

“One of the finest Vale players in the modern era Benny Holland notches up a huge 250 games,” Wesley Vale said in a social media post.

“Benny’s footy resume speaks for itself. Premiership player, best-and-fairest winner, leading goalkicker, best on ground in GF (grand final), he has done it all being a dominant ruckman or key forward.

“Behind the scenes he does a power of work and has been club treasurer and committee member for the past five seasons.

“His love and dedication to his beloved Roos is evident and we wish him all the best and hope to celebrate with a win.”

Holland’s effort comes after Motton Preston’s Jalen Hayward kicked 30 goals against the same opposition earlier this year.

Wesley Vale currently sit third on the ladder with two rounds left to play in the season.

They’ll face ladder leader Sheffield this weekend.
