Lauderdale’s quest for a maiden TSL premiership has taken a massive hit with three-time Alastair Lynch Medalist Sam Siggins to miss the remainder of the season.

Siggins broke his ankle at training on Monday night and will head in for surgery on Wednesday with both Siggins and Bombers coach Allen Christensen confirming the news to this masthead on Tuesday.

The 30 year-old suffered the break in an innocuous marking drill, after landing awkwardly on his leg, and will now miss the Bombers final four games and likely finals campaign.

“It’s been a tough 24 hours but I’m doing okay,” Siggins told The Mercury.

“I’m just focused on getting in for surgery now so I can start the recovery process.”

Siggins last played for Lauderdale in this past Saturday’s 48-point loss to North Launceston, kicking four goals from 14 disposals.

The loss of Siggins - one of just two players to win three Alastair Lynch Medals - is a cruel blow for the Bombers who currently sit fourth on the ladder with a 7-7 record.

They face Glenorchy this Saturday before finishing their regular season with games against Launceston, North Hobart and Kingborough with a bye to also come in round 20.

The Bombers vice-captain went down in round one with a hamstring injury and missed four games before returning with a bang to kick six goals in the Anzac Day win over North Hobart.

His second injury this season means he will finish the year on just 11 games and adds to a list of high profile names at SkyBus Oval who have missed large chunks of 2024.

Christensen, former skipper Josh McGuinness and forward duo Michael Blackburn and Jordan Lane all missed the opening rounds of the season.

Christensen also went down with a hamstring injury in round 8 against Clarence but has recently returned to playing in the development league with the former Geelong and Brisbane small forward expected to return to the senior line-up sooner rather than later.

After winning his first Lynch Medal in 2020, Siggins went back-to-back in 2022 and 2023 and has continued his strong form in the competition’s final year.

His injury-enforced end to the season will see his per game average finish on 22 disposals, 14.6 contested possessions, 6.8 clearances and 2.4 goals per game.

He also sits sixth on the Hudson Medal leaderboard with 26 goals from 11 games.
