South Australia are ready to shock the nation at the Football Australia National Youth Girls Championships.

SA U16 coach Cristiano Dos Santos Rodrigues, a former Adelaide United star, said both teams were ready to bring their ‘A game’.

“The girls have been looking really good and have been picking up what we’ve been teaching them very quickly,” he said.

The championships will take over the home of the Matildas at Latrobe University in Melbourne from Wednesday through to Monday, and SA will be fielding U15 and U16 teams.

The SA girls will be going head-to-head with some of Australia’s best talent at their age levels.

Each side boasts plenty of talent, however, and Rodrigues believes they will put their skills on full display.

“For some of our players it’s their first championships and, for others, they’ve had a bit more experience, so we’ve got a good mix and everyone is excited and confident,” he said.

“We’ve been able to play a lot of games in the lead-up and also against boys teams, so we’ve had good preparation.”

“We’ve got a lot of talented girls in both teams, it’s hard to single anyone out.

“We’re ready to show Australia what SA football is all about and how we do things over here.

“The girls know what they can do and they’re going to show that to the other teams.”

While both sides will be aiming to go as deep as possible in the tournament, Rodrigues also believed the experience would be valuable for SA’s young guns in the future, win or lose.

“Of course we all want to win, but we know it’s also a great opportunity to develop and work together in a team environment.

“We want to play great football on a big stage and the girls are going to benefit a lot from that.”
