A MAIDEN first grade century to Caleb Oakes has rescued South Hobart-Sandy Bay from a batting disaster before three late blows put the Sharks in control against North Hobart at the TCA.

In the first red ball action of the CTPL season, Oakes shone with a brilliant unconquered 115 in the visitors’ total of 212.

Opener Tim Cannon (57) shared a 93-run partnership with Oakes for the third wicket but remarkably no other Shark reached double figures.

In 25 previous innings, Oakes had passed 50 just once but his sublime knock, which contained 13 boundaries and one six and came from 181 balls, held South-Sandy’s innings together.

Tom Rogers and Ben Fraser snared three wickets apiece for the hosts, who crashed to 3-19 at stumps in reply with Hamish Kingston picking up 2-14.

There was also another maiden century maker at the Twin Ovals, with Jake Steele reaching the milestone 15 years after making his first grade debut against University.

Steele found himself walking to the crease on the second ball of the day when Jason Shelton fell for a golden duck, but it was the only joy the Lions had for nearly five hours.

Steele (130, 216 balls, 13 boundaries and three sixes) combined with Connor O’Brien (71) in a 211-run union, which had the Knights dominating for two and a half sessions.

The duo departed in quick succession in the final session, as the visitors clawed back slightly but they still face a hefty run chase next week.

A solid bowling effort from Greater Northern has given the Raiders the upper hand against reigning premiers Lindisfarne at Anzac Park.

With Evan Gulbis sending down 28 overs on his way to picking up 4-38, the visitors restricted the Lightning to 174, a total that was only boosted late thanks to tailenders Daniel Chapman and coach Matt Wilkie.

Lindisfarne were on the ropes at 8-111 before Chapman (44) and Wilkie (38 not out) helped add invaluable late runs.

Raiders openers Brayden Stepien and Brodie Hayes survived four overs in last 12 minutes, erasing 14 runs from the target.

Glenorchy holds the upper hand against New Town, cracking through the Bucks’ top order in the last half an hour of play.

The Pies compiled 9-277 declared, with Charlie Eastoe (68) and Nathan Matthews (63) both scoring half centuries.

The declaration proved a masterstroke when Victorian recruit Matthew Fotia (2-10) and James Bowen (1-12) both struck to leave the hosts 3-22.
