Glenorchy opens its CTPL account after big third wicket partnership seals successful run chase

Glenorchy captain Charlie Eastoe has kickstarted his 2020-21 CTPL season in style, anchoring the Pies to victory over Kingborough with the help of a Raiders recruit.

GLENORCHY captain Charlie Eastoe has picked up where he left off last CTPL season — with a century — to pilot Glenorchy to a memorable victory against Kingborough.

Eastoe scored his maiden first grade ton in the last match of the 2019-20 summer and after last week’s washout, went one better in his first trip to the crease this year with an unbeaten 106 as the Pies mowed down their 235-run target with one over spare at the Twin Ovals.

He combined with Greater Northern recruit Jake Williams (82 not out) in an unbroken 182-run partnership for the third wicket, steadying the ship after the visitors lost openers Manpreet Singh Mahla and Nathan Matthews cheaply.

Eastoe cracked 10 boundaries and two sixes in his 105-ball masterclass, which coach Brett Geeves hailed just reward for effort.

“After that hundred last year, he started his pre-season three days after that, it kind of sparked a real fire in him, a bit of belief,” Geeves said.

“He had a couple of years away from the game and has worked his tail off all winter … just an unbelievable reward for a kid that has been working super hard.

“It is nice to watch that unfold. For those two boys to get us home two down was a really nice win.”

The Knights’ 5-234 was built on another rapid-fire knock from Clive Rose, who backed up his unbeaten century in round one with a 55-ball 66 not out.

Mitch Backhouse scored 58 and shared a 131-run stand with Rose for the fifth wicket, rescuing the innings after the hosts had lost 3-4 to slip to 4-80.

Another thriller unfolded at Kangaroo Bay, with Clarence sneaking home by three wickets against South Hobart-Sandy Bay in the last over of the match.

The Sharks posted 8-149 from a rain-reduced 38 overs, thanks largely to captain Sean Willis who made a fluent 71 (82 balls, five boundaries and two sixes).

Clarence was well on track after Justin Galeotti (50) and Michael Jones (49) took the Roos to 1-101 in reply, but when Michael Flanagan removed both in quick succession and Caedence Kuepper sent Thomas Vaughan and Wade Irvine packing shortly after the momentum had swung.

But Ned Absolom (22 not out) kept his cool to hit the winning runs from the first ball of the last over.

Both Lindisfarne’s clash against New Town at Anzac Park and the Greater Northern-University match at Riverside were called off Friday night due to wet surfaces.
