Hurricanes get a hot start in run chase against Heat before rain washes away chance for result

Chloe Tryon’s elevation to the top of the order provided some punch in Hobart’s batting powerplay, but Sydney’s fickle weather again had the final say for a second successive WBBL match.

A LONG-awaited promising batting powerplay has been to no avail for the Hobart Hurricanes after rain washed out their second consecutive WBBL match.

After a disappointing tournament opener against Adelaide, the Hurricanes have been unable to gain redemption with Sydney’s fickle weather again wreaking havoc.

The Hurricanes were making a fist of their DLS target of 106 from 11 overs against the Brisbane Heat at the Sydney Showground Stadium on Saturday afternoon before the heavens opened for a second time.

Kiwi Rachel Priest and South African Chloe Tryon — elevated from the middle order with the asking rate nearly 10 runs an over from the outset — had pounded 43 runs from 4.3 overs to set the platform for the chase.

Priest was unbeaten on 16 from 12 balls, while Tryon clubbed two sixes and two boundaries in her 15-ball 26 not out to have Hobart on track.

However no more play was possible when players were forced from the field for the last time.

Brisbane had reached 2-80 from 11 overs before the first downpour halted action.

Belinda Vakarewa struck on the second ball of the match when she bowled former Hurricane Georgia Redmayne, before Maddy Green (33 from 24) and Jess Jonassen (29 not out) led the Heat fightback.

Hobart is due to clash with the Melbourne Stars on Sunday afternoon.
