Hobart Hurricanes captain not shying away from internal expectations despite struggles of past two seasons

Four wins from the past two campaigns has left Hobart considered an outsider for WBBL|05. However Corinne Hall, who regains the captaincy, is excited about the additions to the side.

CONSECUTIVE WBBL wooden spoons has not deterred the Hurricanes from placing big expectations on themselves leading into the fifth edition of the tournament.

Hobart will begin its Big Bash campaign this weekend with a pair of matches against the Melbourne Stars, desperate to start on a positive note after managing just four victories in the past two seasons.

However despite the team’s recent struggles, Corinne Hall — who returns as skipper after Sasha Moloney was given the role last year — is confident the Hurricanes have the list to challenge for the title.

“There is a bit of expectation around the group, it is probably coming from ourselves rather than outside sources because we know how hard we have worked and how much we have improved,” Hall said before the team flew to Melbourne to finalise preparations.

“Last year we played some really quality cricket, we just didn’t get the results we sometimes probably deserved.

“Having some more experienced players in the group, especially from a bowling point of view, with Tayla Vlaeminck coming in and Nic Carey in particular, hopefully this year we will be able to seize those moments a bit more.

“Our squad is as strong as it’s been and I’m really looking forward to seeing how we go.”

Hobart has bolstered its squad with a raft of international talent, which includes Australians Vlaeminck and Carey and new imports Chloe Tryon and Fran Wilson.

After struggling with her own form while captain in WBBL|03, Hall believes she has learned from her mistakes and is much better prepared to lead from the front.

“The biggest thing I learned was you can’t do everything yourself, I was trying to fix a lot of things around the group and not looking after my own performance.

“That will be a huge focus for me this year, making sure I am taking care of what I’m doing and how I’m contributing to the team and also relying on our support staff.

“But we have a leadership group for a reason, there are four of us that make a lot of the decisions, I feel like I am just wearing the hat this year.”
