Brayden Webb back for record-equalling sixth season as captain of TSL club Glenorchy

They thought he might never play again but Brayden Webb is about to prove them wrong and will equal a club record to boot.

AFTER fearing their onfield leader may never play again after wrecking his knee last year, Glenorchy says captain Brayden Webb will be back for a record-equalling sixth year as skipper.

And in an extra bonus, key defender Daniel Joseph should also be ready to go in round one.

At the time of his injury, Glenorchy coach Paul Kennedy said Webb had done “a truckload of damage” to his knee when North Launceston ruckman Alex Lee fell across his leg in the second quarter of their night match at UTAS Stadium last May.

IT’S ALL BAD NEWS FOR BRAYDEN WEBB AND HIS INJURED KNEE

Webb should be available when the TSL season kicks off, with a starting date expected to be set for somewhere between late June and August.

It will be Webb’s sixth season as Glenorchy captain, equal with the reign of Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame player Michael Styles.

Webb’s vice-captain will be 2019 stand-in skipper Josh Arnold.

Kennedy credited Webb, known throughout the TSL as “Pidge”, for the strong retention of players when he took over as senior coach three years ago.

“At the time he signed on for another two years and stood up in front of the group and told everyone to stay and help the club keep strong, and for of a guy like ‘Pidge’, he doesn’t say a lot, but when he talks, people listen,” Kennedy said.

“That was a really powerful moment, and as a result our retention of players has been really good and a lot of that has to do with people like ‘Pidge’, Josh Arnold and Daniel Joseph.”

Joseph wrecked his knee in round two last year, and he is also expected to play when round one arrives.

“They were both due to come back in about round seven this year,” Kennedy said.

“The postponement of the season has bought them another three months or so, and they can get further along in their rehab.

“With all of the bad stuff happening in the community, one positive to come out of a bad situation – one silver lining from the club’s perspective – is we get those guys back to play a full season.”
