GLENORCHY’S worst fears have been realised, with news that captain Brayden Webb is out for the season after doing a “truckload of damage” to his left knee.

Scans revealed significant damage to Webb’s ACL and MCL as well as other general damage to his knee.

As Glenorchy prepares for its TSL blockbuster against ladder leaders Lauderdale at KGV today, coach Paul Kennedy said he was very disappointed.

“He’s done the whole kit and caboodle, so he’s out for the season,” Kennedy said.

“Everything that could be done has been done – the ACL, MCL and just a truckload of damage. We are gutted for him.”

Webb captained Tasmania in its clash with the NEAFL in Hobart in 2017 and brought up his 150-game milestone for the Pies in April last year before wrecking his ankle and missing most of the season.

Kennedy said Webb was fit and firing this season, Glenorchy’s 100th anniversary, until North Launceston ruckman Alex Lee fell across his knee in the second quarter of their night match at UTAS Stadium last Saturday.

“No one bleeds black and white like ‘Pidge’,” Kennedy said. “He’s had a bad run for a number of years and he’s been playing good footy in our centenary year.

“So for someone like him to go down in such a special season, we are just gutted for him.”

Webb joins Glenorchy centre half-back and vice-captain Daniel Joseph (knee) on the sidelines for the season.

With the side’s other vice-captain Josh Arnold out with general soreness after a heavy clash with North Launceston player Dakota Bannister last Saturday, the team’s deputy vice-captain, 19-year-old Harrison Gunther, steps up as captain for Saturday’s clash.

On a positive note for Magpie fans, Jaye Bowden (ankle) passed a fitness test on Thursday night and Kennedy said he would “expect him to play” against unbeaten Lauderdale.

“I can’t ever remember sitting on top of the ladder in 10 years so that’s something a bit different for us,” said Lauderdale coach Darren Winter.

“This is the last game of the first round, so at this stage of the year we’ve always been counting which games we have to win to make the finals or sneak into third position.

“We know that we can make the top three and we can go into the second part of the season confident that we can do that and not be chasing our tails.”
