A year 12 student has been remembered for his gentle and caring nature after he was killed in a quad bike tragedy in Melbourne’s outer east.

Justin Harris, 17, fell from an ATV at a McKillop Rd property in Mount Evelyn about 12.30pm on Sunday.

He was treated by paramedics but tragically died at the scene while a teenage girl was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Justin was a talented basketball player, a lover of the great outdoors and passionate about music.

He was also in his final year of school at Edinburgh College in Lilydale.

His former basketball coach, Tim Drewitt, told the Herald Sun that Justin was “incredibly polite”.

“The way he conducted himself were beyond his years,” he said.

“Justin would always strive to be the best he could be.

“From his passion to music and his desire to improve at basketball, his effort always shone brightly.

“The hours we spent working on his game at the stadium, to his free throws and jump shots.”

Mr Drewitt said Justin was “one of the most gentle boys”.

“He always had time for those around him, especially those younger than him or those struggling to find their feet,” he said.

“Justin really shone in the peer support program he was a part of in 2021, his dedication to caring for the year 7s when he was in year 10, and assisting them in the year long transition to high school never wavered.”

Mr Drewitt said he will miss Justin’s “cheeky smile”.

“I will miss our in-depth chats about life, sport and the outdoors,” he said.

“I will miss his cheeky smile.

“The hole in so many’s hearts is a true testament to the character and quality of the young man that he was.”

Tributes have flowed on social media with the tight-knit Yarra Ranges community remembering Justin as a “beautiful boy”.

Clare Jones said Justin’s laughter was infectious.

“It was such a privilege to teach and interact with him,” she said.

“He drew out the laughter and brought out the best in the people around him.”

“Always polite and gentle,” David Jones said.

“Leaves a massive hole in our hearts.”

Natalie Rae said Justin had a “beautiful soul” and was “absolutely amazing”.
