The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

POLICE do not yet know why a car involved in a fatal crash near Elizabeth Town on Monday night crossed onto the wrong side of the road before colliding with a white LDV ute.

The orange 2010 Ford Festiva was being driven towards Launceston by a 28-year-old woman from Blackstone Heights.

She died at the scene after the crash on the Bass Highway about 7.40pm.

The occupants of the ute, a 42-year-old man and 35-year-old woman from Gunns Plains, received non-life threatening injuries and were transported to hospital.

Inspector Ruth Orr said the pair were conscious and alert after the crash and it was believed the male driver of the ute sustained leg or hip injuries.

Traffic was diverted around the scene via Railton Rd and Gannons Hill Rd for about four hours on Monday night.

“It doesn’t appear at this time that the speed of the cars was involved,” Insp Orr said.

The crash occurred in a 110km/h zone, conditions were fine and the road surface was dry.

The occupants of both vehicles were wearing seatbelts.

“There are a number of factors that could contribute to this crash, which are being investigated.”

The crash follows the death of an 88-year-old man in a two car collision on the Huon Highway on Friday night and a serious single car crash on Huon Rd at Fern Tree on Sunday morning.

“It’s really important that people do take care on our roads and drive to the conditions,” Insp Orr said.

Insp Orr said there had been several serious crashes on the Bass Highway around Elizabeth Town, but said there was no known causal link.

Police will return to re-examine the scene on Wednesday morning.

The Bass Highway near Elizabeth Town will be closed in both directions for an estimated 30 minutes from 10:30am.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Police would like to hear from anyone who saw either vehicle travelling on the Bass Highway before the crash, or who may have dashcam footage.
