The second proposal for a stadium at Macquarie Point has the backing of the Hobart City Council, after a late night decision which could pave the way for the project.
On Monday night, the council voted to support, in principle, the transfer of land to Stadia Precinct Consortia, the group behind the second design for the stadium.
It means the council is open to the possibility of signing over land it owns at Regatta Point, should the state government agree to proceed with the stadium option.
Under the Coleman proposal, the stadium would be half-built into the Regatta Point hillside, with a 5000-car subterranean carpark, public transport and freight access.
The other half would project into the Derwent and include an outer wall made up of 450 private apartments, a hotel and convention centre, restaurants, retail space and a private hospital.
The council would own the carpark at the precinct and collect revenue from it. .
The proposal has already received support from Federal Group, and the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry
Now that the council has agreed it would sign over the land, the ball is now in the state government’s court to decide if it will proceed with the Coleman proposal.
Late last year, the government demanded more detail on the project, giving the group a deadline of February 5 to answer key concerns.
It’s understood the council will consider the option further in February.
