RSV Nuyina icebreaker nearing completion

Final fitouts are being installed on Australia’s newest icebreaker, the RSV Nuyina, to replace Hobart’s beloved Orange Roughy.

EXCLUSIVE: A look inside the construction of Australia's colossal icebreaker

AUSTRALIA’S new $2 billion icebreaker RSV Nuyina has roared into life with the turning of its 43.5 tonne starboard propeller for the first time.

The Romanian shipyard team also started the main engine and began work to commission the port propeller over the coming weeks.

Work on the internal fit-out is nearing completion, including living areas, crew sleeping quarters, the galley and laboratories.

RSV Nuyina will replace Australia’s current icebreaker, the Aurora Australis.

“Not only is it a good looking ship but it will also be the most powerful icebreaker in Antarctica when it goes online at the end of the year,” Australian Antarctic Division assets and infrastructure manager Rob Bryson said.
