PREPARATIONS are ramping up for the arrival of Australia’s newest icebreaker in its home port of Hobart next year.
The 160-metre, 24,000-tonne RSV Nuyina will replace the Aurora Australis, and is currently under construction in Romania.
Serco was awarded the contract for the design, build, operation and maintenance of the new RSV Nuyina in 2016.
Serco Defence electrical engineering manager Daniel Webster recently joined an Australian Antarctic Division expedition to Macquarie Island aboard the Aurora Australis, which resupplies the island over the summer months.

“I was able to see how the AAD conduct resupply operations to Macquarie Island, refuelling and the interaction between the ship’s crew and the AAD,” Mr Webster said.
“This opportunity has helped me to gain a better understating of the operating and maintaining phases for the RSV Nuyina.”
