REVEALED: Hobart Football Club members suspended and banned over Lakes Hotel attack

The sanctions handed down to players and officials from the Hobart Football Club after an attack at the Great Lake Hotel have finally been revealed. NAMES + PUNISHMENTS >>

THE AFL integrity unit has ticked off on the sanctions handed down by the Hobart Football Club following the Great Lake Hotel fracas.

A five-man group from the club were involved in a brawl at the Great Lake Hotel while on a competition break last month due to the serious spine injury suffered by Cygnet forward Ryan Wiggins.

While not a club sanctioned trip, one of the members signed into the hotel as “The Hobart Football Club” prior to the incident.

The club refused to make the sanctions public but the Mercury can reveal what was imposed.

It is understood the club has handed down a four-week wholly suspended sentence on playing-coach Alex Gilmour, a two-week wholly suspended sentence on board member Scott Quinn and a one-week wholly suspended sentence on club official Sam Hughes.

But the most severe sanctions were handed down to player Aaron Kaye who has been banned for four games and club official John Mathers who was given a three match suspension.

Hobart president Josh Munting said all parties had co-operated with the investigation.

“The individuals have been sanctioned and accept that their behaviour didn’t meet the standards expected at the HFC,” Munting said.

“All parties have accepted the sanctions and have learned from the alleged incident.

“We have every confidence that the individuals involved and the football club will learn from this situation, will improve and continue to be a strong member of the SFL and broader football community.”

AFL Tasmania also declined to identify the group’s individual sanctions.

It did provide a statement to the Mercury saying the AFL’s integrity unit had concluded its investigation after gathering all relevant information from the Lakes Hotel venue owner, the club and police.

“The Hobart Football Club has informed AFL Tasmania that it has handed down sanctions to the coach, players and officials involved, including suspensions, which have been accepted by those players and officials,” the statement said.

“AFL Tasmania has expressed to the club its disappointment at the actions of the players and officials involved.

“The Hobart Football Club has communicated its commitment to educating its members to behave in ways that reflect the high behavioural standards of the club and the game at all times.

“AFL Tasmania wishes to remind all leagues, clubs and players across Tasmanian football that they have a role to play in upholding acceptable and respectful behavioural standards in the community and in particular when representing such leagues and clubs in formal and informal settings.”

It said no further action would be taken by AFL Tasmania and it now considered the matter closed.

Since the incident, Hobart has not won a game, and Kaye has not played the past three games and will miss the final game of the season, the match against Brighton at the TCA on Saturday.
