Hobart appoints independent investigator into alleged incident during SFL’s postponed round

AN alleged off field incident involving members of the Hobart Football Club during the postponed round of the SFL has been referred to police.

A handful of Tigers were allegedly involved in an incident at the Great Lake Hotel on July 11.

That round of SFL matches had been postponed following the off field accident to Cygnet forward Ryan Wiggins which has left him with a serious spinal injury.

Hobart president Joshua Munting confirmed the club was aware of the allegations, and provided a statement to the Mercury.

“The HFC is aware of an alleged incident at the Great Lake Hotel on 11 July 2021.

“The allegations made do not relate to a Hobart Football Club activity. Upon being informed of the incident, the club appreciated the seriousness of the allegations and appointed an independent investigator to advise on the incident.

“The board of the Hobart Football Club are in the process of considering the findings of the report and will ensure that procedural fairness and natural justice are adhered to.

“It would be unfair on the parties involved to publicly comment on the matter while it is unresolved.”

SFL competition manager George Kalis issued a statement to the Mercury confirming the league, and AFL Tasmania, have also been briefed of the alleged incident.

“AFL Tasmania and the SFL were made aware of an alleged incident at a public venue involving players from the Hobart Football Club.

“The matter is being taken seriously and all relevant information is being gathered. As the matter has been referred to police, we won’t be making further comment at this time.”
