House fire, Bridgewater
Tuesday, September 28
THE cause of a fire that tore through a Bridgewater home will likely not be known until at least Wednesday.
Police and firefighters were called to the blaze on Gunn St, near the intersection of Eddington St, just before 3.30pm.
They arrived to find the weatherboard home fully engulfed in fire.
By about 4.30pm, the fire was contained, with a full investigation set to take place.
Observations of the home show significant fire damage.
At the scene, Tasmania Police Sergeant Brad Conyers told the Mercury no one had been injured as a result of the blaze.
None of the occupants of the home were there at the time, he said.
“Very early on in the piece, we were able to determine there were no occupants in the residence, or pets,” Sgt Conyers said.
“And we were able to speak with and contact the occupants and account for everybody.
“Whilst the Tasmania Fire Service were conducting the firefighting efforts, Tasmania Police has gone around the surrounding properties and ensured that they have been evacuated.”
Sgt Conyers said it was believed two adults and five children normally lived at the residence.
He said a fire watch would likely be placed on the home overnight.
“We won’t have enough light to fully investigate this tonight and our investigators will return in the morning to determine the cause,” he said.

House fire closes part of Ridgley Highway
Tuesday, September 28
A QUEENSLAND family’s dream of moving into their new property and starting life in Tasmania has been put on hold due to a fire.
The family, from Gympie, had recently taken possession of their new weatherboard house in Ridgley, in Tasmania’s North West.
The father had moved down to get things ready for the arrival of the rest of the family.
Early Tuesday morning a spark from an open fire – which was not screened – started a fire which quickly took hold.
The house has been completely destroyed and will need to be demolished.
It is understood the new family home was insured.
Fire Investigation Wayne Viney said the man was lucky to get out alive as he was asleep at the time the fire broke out.
“He heard unusual crackling and woke as the fire started to take hold,” Mr Viney said.
“He is shaken up by what has happened.”
Two crews from Burnie, two from Ridgley and one from Somerset arrived at the property just after 5am to find the house well alight.
The fire was brought under control two hours later – and the section of the Ridgley Highway the house fronts was closed.
The new homeowner was taken to the NWRH where he was treated for smoke inhalation.
He has since been discharged,
It is not know yet if the family will rebuild on the same block or search for another new property to call their Tasmanian home.
