Sub-zero mornings, frost and snow showers are forecast for parts of Tasmania over the next few days.
Weatherzone meteorologist Ben Domensino said “a tongue of cold air” would extend from the Southern Ocean towards southwestern Australia.
“A cold Southern Ocean air mass will spread across Australia this week, causing a run of wintry days and nights for much of the country before possibly culminating in heavy rain along the east coast,” Mr Domensino said.
“This frigid air mass will slowly spread across the country during the remainder of this week, causing a spell of cold and wet weather.”
The Bureau of Meteorology says “a weak cold front” was expected to cross Tasmania overnight and early Wednesday.
“A southerly flow is then expected to persist through Wednesday as a ridge builds to the south of Tasmania,” their forecast says. “The ridge will move over the state throughout Thursday, persisting on Friday.”
National Weather Forecast: Showers continue in NSW, more settled elsewhere.

Tassie’s higher altitudes are expected to see snow showers, south-westerly winds and temperatures dropping as low as minus-six degrees later in the week.
For the South-East, snow is expected down to 900 metres overnight, slightly lower at 800m Wednesday and above 1000m Thursday.
There’ll be a high chance of showers Wednesday, most likely in the morning and afternoon.
Overnight temperatures are expected to dip to between zero and 5 with daytime temperatures reaching between 6 and 11.
Hobart is expected to see minimum temps of 4C Thursday, 2C on Friday and 3C Saturday and Sunday.
It’s expected to be even frostier in the north of the state, with Launceston’s minimums expected to dip to minus-2C Thursday, a shuddering minus-3C Friday and minus-1C Saturday and Sunday.
