Tassie’s controversial Ladies Lounge has been reborn — albeit in a pop-up capacity on Queensland’s Glitter Strip of the Gold Coast.
Artist and curator Kirsha Kaechele confirmed The Ladies Lounge opens at HOTA (Home of the Arts) museum on the Gold Coast from today until August 10.
“WHY the Goldie? Well, it’s the land of sun-soaked masculinity,” Kaechele wrote on her Instagram page, accompanied by some very risque shots of her dressed as a meter maid being served by a butler on the beach.
“Call it artistic temptation — I couldn’t resist. So we’ll have some sensational butlers. Bow ties, budgie smugglers, beautiful manners, and posture (/pecs) so perfect it might break your heart a little.”
Mona’s Ladies Lounge hit the headlines last year when the museum shut the lounge after a tribunal found it discriminatory towards men following a complaint by visitor Jason Lau.
The Supreme Court quashed the decision after Kaechele’s dramatic appeal, and it reopened for a brief “victory lap” before it was ultimately closed in January this year.
“As usual the line between curator and artist is blurred,” Kaechele explained.
“My exhibition is curated by Michael Zavros but I’ve curated him into my exhibition — his art, and his body, as butler. I have also curated a parallel artwork by my friend and fellow American Tora Lopez: The Complaints Department.
“The work is fully operational, so do visit if we’ve somehow managed to offend you (again). They adore feedback and completely disregard it.”
Kaechele teased some other “exciting butler cameos” — including the mayor of the Gold Coast himself, Tom Tate and American sculpture artist Jeff Koons.
And in true Kirsha Kaechele fashion, she isn’t planning on leaving the Sunshine State without making a few more waves.
“Oh yes! Mark your calendars for a topless sit-in on the beach, Aug 10,” she teased on Instagram.
“A participatory artwork. Details to come.”
