LANE closures on the Tasman Highway will continue for another month as work on the Bridge of Remembrance is completed.

Traffic flowed beneath the bridge yesterday as the Tasman Highway reopened as scheduled at dawn.

A section of the highway had been closed to allow two, 30-metre spans of the $11 million footbridge to be lifted into place early on Saturday.

But the Mercury understands remaining works including tensioning of the bridge and cladding will continue for at least another month, meaning Hobartians keen to stroll or cycle across the new bridge may have to wait until March.

A Hobart City Council spokesman said the lane closures would occur late in the evening to minimise traffic disruptions.

“To allow for Fulton Hogan to undertake painting and finishing works on the Bridge of Remembrance, one lane each way on the Tasman Highway will be closed between 8pm and 6am from January 21 until and including Thursday, January 31,” he said.

On Tuesday, January 29, the closures will be from midnight to 6am only, to assist fans attending the Big Bash League match at Blundstone Arena.

Vietnam Veterans Association of Tasmania state president Terry Rose said the bridge looked fantastic.

“When I saw the concept drawings ... I thought it looked incredible,” he said.

“Now it’s up in place I think it will be a fantastic addition to the Hobart skyline.

“It will join two wonderful precincts, the Soldiers’ Memorial to the Cenotaph.”

Thousands of travellers took advantage of a free ferry service between Bellerive and Hobart’s Brooke St Pier on Saturday while the section of the Tasman Highway was closed for the installation of the bridge. The bridge commemorates 100 years since the end of World War I. It was meant to be completed last November 11 in time for the armistace celebrations.
