A PETITION calling for a public meeting on the kunanyi/Mt Wellington cable car proposal will be presented to Hobart City Council tonight.
Signatories to the petition want the meeting to highlight community concerns on a cable car over the Organ Pipes.
Residents Opposed to the Cable Car set up the petition and said they had gathered the necessary 1000 signatures within two weeks.
The group’s spokesman Ted Cutlan said the developers had twice invited the community to meetings which they later cancelled.
“They are now proceeding with a development application regardless of community opposition and in spite of the fact the council has ruled out the use of its land for a cable car,” he said.
“This meeting will be an opportunity for the public to ask questions and demand the Hobart City Council never allow the public bushland they own to be handed to the Mt Wellington Cableway Company.”
Political analyst Kevin Bonham said preference flows in last year’s Hobart Lord Mayoral race that delivered Anna Reynolds the top job showed the cable car played a significant role in voters’ minds as they numbered their ballot papers.
