LATEST: WORSENING weather across Tasmania has created hazardous conditions on state highways as police advise of several motor vehicle crashes and fallen trees on roads.

Tasmania Police said trees had fallen across Gordon River Rd in the Derwent Valley, west of Maydena about 8pm.

Police advise motorists to take caution when approaching the area.

In a statement, police said the Midland Hwy has been closed to all traffic at Melton Mowbray and also at the highway intersection with East Bagdad Road due to snow.

Vehicles will be turned around at these points, police said.

Officers have also receiving reports of vehicles crashing and/or becoming stuck in hazardous conditions.

Police are strongly encouraging all motorists to:

  • Slow down and be alert for ice and slippery road conditions
  • Never drive on icy or snowy roads
  • Always obey road closure signs which are put in place for motorist safety
  • Put their headlights on if visibility is reduced
  • Leave plenty of space between you and the vehicle in front of you

ROAD CLOSURES

The following roads have been closed to ALL vehicles:

  • Tasman Highway from Fingerpost Road, Orielton to Buckland.
  • Huon Highway from Sandfly Intersection to Grove which includes Vinces Saddle.
  • Lyell Highway – Tarraleah to Mt Arrowsmith.
  • Huon Highway – Fern Tree to Neika
  • Huon Highway – South of the Sandfly turnoff
  • Midland Highway – North bound traffic from Melton Mowbray to Jericho.
  • Tasman Highway, north of Fingerpost Rd
  • Lyell Highway between Derwent Bridge and Lake Burbury
  • Anthony Road from Murchison Highway to Queenstown turn-off

The following roads are only open to 4WD vehicles:

  • Belvoir Road and Cradle Mountain Road between Murchison and Lowina – Extreme caution to be taken
  • Haulage Road, off Highlands Lake Road
  • Huon Highway, Neika to Leslie Vale
  • Woodbridge Hill Road. 4WD only (low range – please be aware of abandoned vehicles in this area)
  • East Bagdad Road from number 427 is only accessible to 4WD.
  • Waratah Road between Waratah and Savage River – 4WD ONLY
  • Belvoir Road and Cradle Mountain Road between Murchison and Lowina

AFFECTED ROADS

  • Tasman Highway including Runnymede Straight, Bust Me Gall Hill and Cherry Tree Hill
  • Lake Leake Highway
  • Huon Highway including Ferntree and Vinces Saddle and Pinnacle Road
  • Midlands Highway including Spring Hill and St Peters Pass
  • Lyell Highway including Tarraleah and Mt Arrowsmith and Gordon River Road
  • Highland Lakes Road including Shannon Tier, Bakers Tier, Barron Tier and Quamby Bluff and Poatina Road
  • Murchison Highway, Anthony Road, Belvoir Road, Marlborough Highway, Woodsdale Road at Levendale, Collinsvale Road, Glenlusk

EARLIER: AS SNOW begins falling below 200m many of Tasmania’s major arterials are beginning to close.

Police wish to advise the public that the Midland Highway has been closed to all traffic at Melton Mowbray and also at the intersection with East Bagdad Road due to snow.

Vehicles will be turned around at these points.

The Huon Highway south of Sandfly turnoff is also closed due to snow and ice, as

well as the Tasman Highway north of Fingerpost Rd. Commuters heading to the Valley will have to take the Channel Highway, or Nicholls Rivulet home.

Tasmania Police have issued a community alert, stating road conditions in the south of the state are worsening.

“Motorists are warned to use caution when driving on elevated roads which have the potential to be affected by the current weather conditions including snow, ice, rain and damaging winds,” police said.
