The federal budget was handed down on Tuesday night, with Tasmania receiving a welcome $259m more than the last financial year.
The pre-election budget had a sole focus on cost of living despite the budget keeping Australia in the red at a deficit of around $26.9b.
Here’s our quick guide to the major measures of the budget:
-$3.7b in GST for 2025-26

-$200,000 to provide rainwater tanks for the remote First Nations community of Truwana / Cape Barren Island
-$200m for upgrades to the Arthur Highway
-$80m for the Southern Outlet Transit Lane Extension
-$900,000 in 2025–26 towards the Hillcrest Tragedy Memorial
-$400,000 per year over the next three years to develop a medical research centre within the Launceston General Hospital, continuing on from last financial year’s funding for a total project investment of $1.6m
