Federal budget 2025-26 for Tasmania: All you need to know in minutes

The federal budget delivered some big numbers, including for Tasmania. Here’s a breakdown of the key things to know at a glance.

The federal budget was handed down on Tuesday night, with Tasmania receiving a welcome $259m more than the last financial year.

The pre-election budget had a sole focus on cost of living despite the budget keeping Australia in the red at a deficit of around $26.9b.

Here’s our quick guide to the major measures of the budget:

-$3.7b in GST for 2025-26

-$6.309b in total Australian government payments for Tasmania

-$200,000 to provide rainwater tanks for the remote First Nations community of Truwana / Cape Barren Island

-$200m for upgrades to the Arthur Highway

-$80m for the Southern Outlet Transit Lane Extension

-$900,000 in 2025–26 towards the Hillcrest Tragedy Memorial

-$400,000 per year over the next three years to develop a medical research centre within the Launceston General Hospital, continuing on from last financial year’s funding for a total project investment of $1.6m

-$48m in 2025-26 for the Northern Heart Centre in Launceston, with a total spend of $88m over the next three years

-$6m for supporting increase in demand for maternity services in Hobart

-$5m for the construction of a new hospice within the Launceston General Hospital precinct, following the 2024-25 year’s investment of $5m

-$292.5m for public schools and $449.3m for private schools in 2025-26 through the Better and Fairer Schools funding

-$11.8m for Hydro Tasmania’s Tarraleah Hydro Power Station redevelopment, following the 2024-25 year’s investment of $30.4m

-$47m over next four years for Macquarie Wharf 6

-$3m in 2025-26 and $2.6m in 2026-27 for the upgrade of tourist facilities at Freycinet

-$200,000 for improving access to palliative care for those living in residential aged care facilities

-$400,000 for improving access to and expanding cervical cancer screening services

-$10.6m for new Medicare Urgent Care Clinics, announced in early March this year

-$50m in one-time funding for hospitals and health services in 2025-26

-$200,000 for surveillance of foodborne diseases

-New property price caps for the Australian government’s Help to Buy Scheme for the Hobart area at $700,000 and other regions of Tasmania at $550,000

-$95.6m in 2025-26 for urban renewal projects in Hobart and Launceston, including the Macquarie Point precinct in Hobart and stadium redevelopment in Launceston

-$2m in 2025-26 for the Launceston City Deal which supports projects to improve liveability, innovation and incomes

-$43.7m in Energy Bill Relief

-$2.3m for the Urban Rivers and Catchments Program in Tasmania

-Continued funding of $5.1m for World Heritage Sites in Tasmania

-$23.9m in 2025-26 through the National Access to Justice Partnership

-$5.9m for National Firearms Register implementation in Tasmania

-$2m for literacy support for students

-$8.7m for the Anglesea Paterson Project, upgrading engineering services and refurbishing buildings at Hobart’s Anglesea Barracks and the Youngtown Depot and constructing new facilities in North Launceston

-$181.9m for the Tasmanian Freight Equalisation Scheme

-$1.2m for the National Immunisation Program

-$2.9m for the expansion of the John Flynn Prevocational Doctor Program
