Tasmanian devils are feeling the chill of winter too – even from interstate.
A devil enclosure at the New South Wales wildlife conservation Aussie Ark has been hit by unpredicted snow, cyclonic winds and torrential rain during the ‘cyclone bomb’ event sweeping the state, leaving behind fifteen fallen trees, damaged fences and a blanket of snow at the property.
Out of the hundreds of animals on the site, only two Tasmanian devils remain unaccounted for due to the damaged enclosures and staff are working quickly to make the repairs during the icy conditions.
Managing Director of Aussie Ark Tim Faulkner said the team had only just recovered from the last disaster and now were back to square one.
“This is another catastrophic event, and we’ll manage … but please do spare a thought for all the wildlife out there battling these conditions,” he said.
“Our concern is for the welfare of the devils; they have presented no risk to anyone or anything otherwise.”
Despite the work set out before the team, images and video captured the remaining devils enjoying the powder inside of their enclosures, some taking time to point their black noses into the falling flakes.
Aussie Ark is asking for donations from the public to support the rebuild and ongoing conservation efforts.
