Smoke from bushfires menacing southern Tasmania has again shrouded Hobart, with a pall covering the Big Bash cricket match at Blundstone Arena.

The Tasmania Fire Service has issued a smoke alert for greater Hobart this afternoon.

People travelling in the area should exercise caution if driving in smoke and turn on their headlights.

Tasmanian Environment Protection Authority real-time data shows the concentration of PM10 particles in the air in New Town approached 40 micrograms per cubic metre

PM10 is particulate matter 10 micrometers or less in diameter while PM2.5 particles are less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter.

Exposure to both is linked to increased risks to human health, the World Health Organisation says.
