Police have issued a warning to Huon Valley bushfire evacuees to secure their homes after a man was arrested on suspicion of looting.

Tasmania Police say a 42-year-old Police Point man was charged with a number of burglary and stealing offences on Monday night.

The man was apprehended about 9pm in the Police Point Rd area, with police alleging he was in possession of stolen property taken from residences in the area earlier in the day.

He will appear before the Hobart Magistrates Court on March 13 charged with burglary, aggravated burglary, stealing, unlawful possession of property and resisting a police officer.

“Police remind all members of the community to ensure they lock their properties and vehicles, especially when not in attendance,” Inspector John Ward said.

“Thieves are often opportunistic and I urge everyone to lock their belongings to prevent being a target of burglary.”
