Footage of the terrifying crash that left a grandfather fighting for life, suffering broken bones over a significant portion of his body and his family injured has been released by the court.
The footage, taken from CCTV cameras at a nearby building, and a Dashcam mounted to the Cameron Interstate Transport truck driven by Daniel William Scaife, 47, show the moments before and after the collision.
Both videos show Scaife driving through the intersection of Bridge Rd and Kesters Rd on July 19, 2022 after the light turned red at least five seconds earlier.
Scaife, of Smithfield, was criminally charged after his truck crashed into a Toyota Tarago heading lawfully through a green light, causing injury to all the passengers inside.
Following the crash, the truck stops, and Scaife exits the truck then begins checking on the people in the Toyota, before a number of other people approach to assist.
The footage does not contain any audio, and no conversations were captured.
Scaife pleaded guilty to five counts of causing harm by dangerous driving after the crash injured five people inside
During sentencing submissions in the District Court, the court heard Scaife had 23 previous convictions for prior driving-related offences, faced up to life in jail and a 10-year driving ban for his current charges.
He was also convicted for driving with a 0.085 blood alcohol level a month after the crash.
Driver of the Toyota and grandfather, Alan Mills, told the court through a Victim Impact Statement how it had left him scarred.
Mr Mills said he died on impact, and a nearby Royal Adelaide Hospital trauma doctor who was on scene brought him back, but the damage saw him hospitalised for four months in a “touch-and-go battle with life”.
“This caused a major strain on my family, having to live in the reality I might not survive,” Mr Mills said.
The court heard Mr Mills suffered broken bones all over his body, including ribs, both collarbones, shoulder blade, shoulder, his neck and skull, as well as multiple punctures to his lungs, brain damage and lingering paralysis to the left side of his body.
Mr Mills’ three grandchildren in the rear of the car also suffered injuries, with their parents telling the court through their statement one suffered a concussion and skull fracture.
They also said the children’s behaviour had changed following the crash
The court also heard Mr Mills’ daughter was in the car as well, and now suffers PTSD and has struggled to move past the accident physically and mentally.
Scaife is set to return to court in December to be sentenced before Judge Jane Schammer.
