Family of Adelaide CBD murder victim Ngor Bol tell court they don’t know why he died

The family of a man murdered in the middle of North Tce have told a court they still don’t know why he was stabbed to death, begging his killers for answers.

A Supreme Court Justice has asked two murderers to finally explain why they killed a beloved son – and give the grieving family closure after years of not knowing why he died.

On Friday, the Supreme Court heard sentencing submissions relating to the two men – who cannot be identified – who were found unanimously guilty of murdering 25-year-old Ngor Bol.

Speaking for Mr Bol’s mother and sister, his uncle stressed the family remained unclear about why he had been “viciously” murdered by “violent, hateful” people.

“We have been shocked by the lack of clarity surrounding the case ahead of trial and have struggled to try and uncover and understand the reasons behind his death,” Mr Bol’s uncle said.

“We still cannot make sense of why this happened … we have been seeking answers about the circumstances of this untimely, tragic, needless death.”

Patrick Dawes, for the younger of the two killers – who was a youth at the time of the offence – told the court his client maintained his innocence.

He claimed he was in a hotel at the time of the murder and was with the true murderer only afterwards.

Justice Adam Kimber asked Mr Dawes if his client knew why Mr Bol had been murdered, and if so, did he want to share “why their family member met his death on this night in this way”.

“I am interested in whether or not your client is aware of why this happened, albeit that he maintains that he was not present, and whether or not he wished to assist the family of Mr Bol given what is raised by (the uncle),” His Honour said.

Mr Dawes said he would take instructions from his client on that point, but did not know the answer.

A jury unanimously found both men guilty of murder after a five-week trial.

The court heard Mr Bol was chased from Hindley St before he was stabbed six times in the middle of North Tce by one man, while the second stomped on and kicked his head.

William Boucaut KC for the second man – who also maintains his innocence – told Justice Kimber he would need to take those instructions as well.

The two men were arrested at Adelaide Airport on April 25, 2022

Mr Boucaut told the court “something” had happened to bring two groups of individuals together and “things happened from there”.

“As to what initiated it, no light can be shed on that.”

Justice Kimber remanded the two men in custody, telling them a mandatory life sentence would be formally imposed on the next occasion, but the sentence’s non-parole period would be handed down in December.
