The team behind cult dessert bar Shibui has unveiled plans for a new “passion project” in Adelaide’s eastern suburbs.

Shmochi by Shibui on Payneham Road, St Peters, will focus on their signature mochi doughnuts and a range of elevated desserts.

Sweet tooths can also enjoy ice cream, soft-serve, hot and cold mochi desserts, and their unique interpretations of viral dessert trends.

The trio behind Shmochi – Quang Nguyen, his partner Thy Nguyen, and Lisa Chao – say the new venue is the culmination of “years of pop-ups and experimentation”.

“Customers have been asking for hot mochi doughnuts for years. Shmochi is our answer to that demand, and we’re excited to bring this to St Peter’s,” Ms Chao said.

“This isn’t just a dessert bar – it’s a community hub where everyone is welcome, and every day can be sweet.”

Adelaide dessert king Mr Nguyen is the brainchild behind the innovative creations which have gained a cult following.

Among his eye-catching offerings include Redskin soft-serve with strawberry fairy floss cloud, and a unique take on nutella on toast.

Nguyen previously opened Devour Cafe Patisserie at Prospect, and launched Shibui Dessert Bar in the city in 2018. He’s also behind Noi Vietnamese Eatery on Glen Osmond Road and Ong Vietnamese Kitchen on Rundle Street.

Ms Nguyen said Shmochi will be about more than just fancy desserts.

“It’s about connection. From nostalgic Asian-Australian flavours to innovative new creations, the venue is set to become a dessert destination for the community,” she said.

Shmochi by Shibui will open in coming weeks.
