DESSERT king Quang Nguyen, of Shibui, is going back to his roots. At his new restaurant, Noi Vietnamese Eatery, he will be sharing the dishes he grew up loving.

It’ll be a family affair for Quang, above, who’s teaming up with his wife Thy’s brothers Duyand Toanto revamp the space, formerly occupied by Chopstix on Glen Osmond Rd.

Thy’s family run Chopstix and Lemongrass on Rundle St.

The menu will focus on homely Vietnamese dishes in both families’ traditions, “with a bit more technique, and (be) produce-driven”, Quang says. “It’s a different approach to the mum-and-dad Vietnamese restaurants,” he says. “It will be things we find delicious.”

Quang’s background in food goes back to Kensi days, before his interests led him to desserts, brunch and coffee. He opened Devour and Third Time Lucky, then Shibui dessert cafe. Noi will be his fourth, and biggest, dining concept.

“This has been something in my mind for seven or eight years,” Quang says. “It was the right time and the right place. The opportunity came up for the building and renovation … and we decided as a sibling project to take this on.

“We’ve stripped the whole place out. It’s a project we’re all super excited about.”
