Second shark washes up on Adelaide beach in two days

A second shark has been found washed up on an Adelaide beach in two days, after a dead 3m bronze whaler shark was found at Grange on Thursday.

Shark washes up on shore at Henley Beach

A second shark has washed up on the shore at another beach just days after one was found dead at another popular South Australian location.

Beachgoers at Henley came across a shark struggling onshore just a day after finding a similar deceased animal at Grange on Thursday.

They removed what appears to be rope wrapped around it before dragging it back out to the ocean.

It comes after authorities confirmed the dead shark found washed up on Grange beach on Thursday will be used for research purposes.

Walkers strolling along the Grange Beach shoreline spotted the 3m (10ft) bronze whaler shark about 8am on Thursday morning.

Beachgoer Jason said the shark’s dorsal fin and tail was still intact when he saw it covered in sand, and suspects the creature was unable to return to the water after the tide retreated at about 4am.

He said he also noticed hook marks so believes a fisherman had caught and released it back into the ocean.

Fisheries officers arrived to remove the shark just after 9am.

In a statement on Friday, a spokesman for the Department of Primary Industries and Regions SA said the bronze whaler shark would be used for research purposes.

“PIRSA Fisheries Officer were notified of a dead shark at Grange Beach on Thursday morning and collected the carcass for disposal,” the spokesman said.

“The shark was identified as a bronze whaler. The carcass will be provided to the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) for research purposes.”
