Dublin piggery in Adelaide’s north raided twice by RSPCA after distressing footage

Several pigs had to be put down during RSPCA raids on an Adelaide piggery after distressing footage sparked welfare concerns last month, the animal charity has revealed.

The Andgar Farm piggery came under scrutiny after harrowing footage emerged of pigs living in dishevelled conditions and feeding on carcasses.

An investigation was launched by RSPCA following the video, which was filmed in their Dublin premises on June 14 and 20.

The charity’s inspectorate officers along with PIRSA veterinary staff raided the piggery twice and euthanised 14 pigs, it said in a statement.

Additionally, 21 Animal Welfare Notices have been issued to the owners and managers of the piggery to take immediate action regarding conditions and maintenance – with compliance measures in place through spot inspections.

The piggery owners and managers have been formally interviewed, and the charity is in the process of preparing a comprehensive brief of evidence with the intention to instigate court proceedings.

“We acknowledge the distress and concern these images have caused and we want to assure the community that we take any allegation of animal cruelty extremely seriously,” the RSPCA said.

“Our inspectors work diligently with the South Australian Police and other relevant agencies to fully investigate allegations of animal ill-treatment and bring offenders before the courts.

“Over two nights in June we discovered the decomposing bodies of dozens of dead pigs, a giant pile of up to a hundred corpses, pigs with massive, necrotic wounds and pigs wading through deep mud and waste,” the charity said in a Facebook post.

“Despite a statement from the RSPCA (investigating the complaint), immediate welfare concerns had been addressed‘ pigs were still found in awful conditions. This is unacceptable.”
