A man with a prior conviction of having an unlawful relationship with a person under the age of 17, has been found guilty of stabbing a former reality TV star at a 60th birthday party in a pole dancing clinic.
Abdul Kadws Mohammed Amin held his hands on his hips and shook his head as a District Court jury found him guilty of stabbing then topless waiter and former reality TV contestant Paddy Colliar in 2021.
Known to many for his time on hit TV shows including the Bachelorette, F-Boy Island and Bachelor in Paradise, Mr Colliar is used to being in the spotlight.
But over the past four years, he found himself in the middle of more drama after being stabbed in the back by Amin.
Amin, now 26, was arrested in August 2021 after emergency services were called to a pole dancing studio in Para Hills West.
There, they found Mr Colliar with a stab wound to his back.
In 2022, Amin pleaded not guilty to aggravated causing harm with intent after his arrest in August 2021, but on Monday afternoon, a jury found that he was responsible for leaving Mr Colliar in a “fountain of blood”.
During the trial, the jury heard the reality star was stabbed after intervening in a domestic altercation.
“Shortly before 1.30am, Mr Colliar was having a conversation with a female at that party. While he was talking to her, the accused, on the prosecution case, charged out of a door across the room – he was angry. A confrontation that followed between the accused and (the woman),” prosecutor Matt DeLorme said.
“As a result, the accused grabbed (the woman) by the throat and began thrashing her from side to side.”
Mr Colliar told the jury that he had “intervened” after seeing Amin thrashing the woman around “like a ragdoll”, before Amin then turned on him.
He said it wasn’t until a young girl at the party said he’d been stabbed that he noticed the blood “pouring” out of him.
On Monday afternoon, after just two and half hours of deliberation, the jury found Amin guilty beyond reasonable doubt.
They further found the offence was aggravated because Amin used a weapon – a flick knife he had argued was only used to cut the birthday cake.
After the verdict, Mr DeLorme told Judge Ian White that Amin had been on a suspended sentence bond for a conviction of unlawful sexual intercourse with a child before he stabbed Mr Colliar.
“Your Honour will see he has been convicted of unlawful sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 17 years. He received a suspended sentence bond for 12 months – that expired approximately a week before this offending,” Mr DeLorme said.
Amin will return to court next month ahead of sentencing.
After the verdict, Mr Colliar said it was a relief that the long court process was over.
“I’m definitely relieved,” Mr Colliar said.
“It’s been a long time coming.
“I want to say a huge thank you to Matt the prosecutor, everyone involved and everyone who stood by me through this process. A huge thank you to George (the investigating officer) for his persistence, his perseverance through this case has been incredible.
“Justice has been served today.”
